Life cycle assessment example ppt

Environmental control is increasingly improved. We cannot claim that a product is environmentally friendly just because the production process is safe. It could be that the raw material taken is damaging to the environment so it becomes a sin in the whole process. Here you can download Life cycle assessment example ppt.

We take the sugar factory as an example. The sugar production process is also influenced by the planting sector, the transportation sector, and the sugar milling process itself. So an effort is needed to trace how much the overall environmental impact is.

Life cycle assessment is a method for calculating the environmental impact of a product's life cycle.

In the case of a sugar factory, it is necessary to carry out an audit system of mass flow and energy flow as well as emission flows from the three sectors above (sugar cane planting, transportation, and sugar milling).

The method in this Life Cycle Assessment example ppt

This article includes a life cycle assessment example ppt conducted by the Chemical Engineering of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in a sugar factory in 2020. They conduct an audit on the milling process until it becomes an output.

Meanwhile, the sugarcane planting and transportation sector requires collaboration from other majors such as Agriculture and Industrial Engineering. But for now, the data for both sectors is using the ecoinvent database.

The ecoinvent database was chosen because in Indonesia there are not many studies on life cycle assessments. The database selected also comes from India on the grounds that it has similarities in developing countries and the climate of the two countries.

In the results of these data, in more detail, UGM wants to compare the impact of Global Warming Potential (GWP) on electricity use in sugar factories.

Currently, the PT Madubaru sugar factory in Yogyakarta uses electricity from the State Electricity Company (PLN) and electricity from alternative energy sources.

PLN mostly uses fossil fuels to produce electricity. Whereas fossil fuels have a relatively high emission factor, so their environmental impact is quite large.

Meanwhile, as an alternative step, PT Madubaru uses bagasse biomass for boiler fuel. The boiler is used to generate steam.

The steam is used to run the generator and meet the heat needs of the sugar production process. From the rotation of the generator, electricity can be generated to meet the needs of the sugar factory.

  • Scenario 1: Actual conditions of the sugar factory
  • Scenario 2: full use of electricity from PLN
  • Scenario 3: full use of electricity from alternative fuels

The simulation results will be calculated with the equivalent value of each emission. The CO2 and CH4 emission missiles will have different points. These points are based on the 2001 IPCC standard

CO2 GWP value = 1

CH4 GWP value = 28

Hypothesis in this Life Cycle Assessment example ppt

If viewed from the emission factor of each material, it can be hypothesized that

The GWP value of scenario 2 is higher than in scenarios 1 and 3. This is because scenario 2 uses electricity from PLN, where most of the energy comes from fossil fuels.

Meanwhile, the value of GWP scenario 3 is smaller than scenario 1 and 2 because it uses fuel from bagasse biomass which has a more important emission factor.

Although there are still many improvements that need to be done, this research could be one of the pioneers of LCA studies in Indonesia. With the increasing number of studies on LCA, it is hoped that in the future the database in Indonesia will also be more comprehensive.

What do you think, can the LCA study help to track the environmental impact of a product? Write your opinion in the comments column 😊
